김 회장은 평소 백범 김구 선생 기념 사업에 많은 지원과 관심을 아끼지 않고 있다.

김 회장의 부인인 김미 관장은 김구 선생의 친손녀이자 안중근 의사 조카인 고(故) 안미생 씨를 큰 어머니로 두고 있다.

김 회장은 1993년에 사재를 출연해 비영리법인 김구재단을 설립했다.

김구 선생 서거 60주년이던 2009년엔 미국 브라운대학교에 '김구도서관'을 설립하기도 했다.

김호연 회장과 김미 관장 부부는 지난해 뉴욕에서 김효자 여사를 직접 만나기도 했다.

이후 올해 2월 훈장을 전수 받은 김효자 여사는 백범김구기념관에 어머니 안미생 지사의 건국포장에 대해 기증 의사를 밝혀 왔다.
