정부는 신청서를 제출한 11개 지역을 대상으로 첨단전략산업 관련 선도기업과 투자규모,마이다스 카지노산업생태계 발전 가능성,지역 균형발전 등을 고려해 5곳을 지정했다는 전언이다.

전북은 당초 1~2곳을 지정하거나 많아야 2~3곳을 지정할 것이라는 예상과 달리 5곳이나 지정했음에도 탈락했다는 점에서 정치권은 물론 전주와 익산,마이다스 카지노정읍 등지의 지역민들도 충격적이라는 반응이다.

전북에서는 정부 지정을 앞두고 '2당1락'이라는 말이 나올 정도로 정부가 2곳 이상 지정할 경우 전북은 포함될 가능성이 높지만 1곳만 지정하면 탈락할 것이란 관측이 지배적이었다.

따라서 정부 지정을 앞두고 막판에 복수 지정설이 흘러 나오자 전북 지역민들은 물론 행정과 정치권도 크게 기대하는 모습이었다.

전북 정치권과 행정은 충격 속에서도 대책 마련을 위해 긴급회의를 개최하는 등 황망한 표정이다.

전북지역의 사회단체 한 관계자는 "산·학·연 인프라 구축 차원에서 전북이 타 지역에 절대 뒤지지 않음에도 5곳 지정에 포함되지 않은 것은 비수도권 우선에 균형발전이라는 당초 취지에서 벗어난 것"이라며 "무엇이 문제인지 정확히 파악해 향후 전략산업 유치의 자료로 삼아야 할 것"이라고 말했다.
