이번 사업은 UAE 아즈반 사막 지역에 설비용량 1500MW(메가와트) 규모의 태양광발전소를 건설·운영하는 프로젝트다.총사업비는 9억 달러(약 1조2000억원) 이상이다.

서부발전은 프랑스 전력공사(EDF)의 신재생에너지 자회사인 EDF-R과 컨소시엄을 구성해 UAE 태양광발전사업을 수주했다.국내 최초다.수은은 사업 입찰 초기에 여신의향서(금융기관이 향후 여신심사 절차를 통해 금융 지원하겠다고 밝힌 문서) 발급 등을 통해 서부발전의 이번 사업 수주를 도왔다.이로써 서부발전은 사업주로서 사업 전반을 총괄 수행하게 됐다.

사업부지 면적은 20㎢.축구장 2850개 넓이다.완성된다면 세계에서 일곱 번째로 큰 규모다.완공은 2026년으로 예정됐다.태양광 모듈은 약 293만개를 설치한다.원자력 발전소 1기(1400MW)보다 더 큰 규모의 초대형 태양광발전소를 건설한다.한국 기업이 수주한 태양광발전사업 중에서 단일 사업으로는 설비용량과 사업비 모두 역대 최대다.
