일본 전자기기 제조사 TDK가 전고체 배터리용 신소재를 개발했다고 발표했습니다.애플의 공급업체이기도 한 TDK는 새로운 배터리 시제품을 내년 애플을 비롯한 고객사를 통해 출시할 방침입니다.

현지시간 17일 파이낸셜타임스(FT)에 따르면 TDK가 개발했다고 주장하는 소형 전고체 배터리용 신소재는 에너지 밀도가 1리터당 1천 와트시(Wh)에 달할 전망입니다.현재 양산 중인 배터리보다 약 100배 높습니다.

사측은 전하를 저장하는 배터리 용량이 높기때문에 장치 크기를 줄이고 작동 시간을 늘릴 수 있다고 설명했습니다.또 해당 기술은 시계 및 기타 소형 전자제품에 사용되는 동전 모양 배터리를 대체하는 등 작은 크기의 셀에 사용할 수 있도록 설계됐다고 덧붙였습니다.

사이토 노보루 TDK 최고경영자(CEO)는 "우리가 새로 개발한 전고체 배터리용 소재가 사회의 에너지 전환에 크게 기여할 수 있을 것으로 믿는다”며 “조기 상용화를 목표로 개발을 계속할 것”이라고 말했습니다.

TDK는 스마트폰에 전력을 공급하는 소용량 배터리 분야에서 세계 시장을 50~60% 점유하고 있습니다.회사는 내년부터 새로운 배터리의 시제품 샘플을 고객들에게 배송할 계획이며 이후 대량 생산에 돌입할 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있습니다.

다만 FT는 해당 신소재를 활용해 대형 배터리까지 제조하는 것은 쉽지 않을 것으로 내다봤습니다.TDK의 신소재는 세라믹 소재로 깨지기 쉬워 자동차나 스마트폰용 배터리 생산에는 적합하지 않다는 설명입니다.
