40일 넘게 가자지구 최남단 도시 라파를 공략 중인 이스라엘군이 현지에 남은 하마스 부대 절반을 무력화했다고 주장했습니다.

17일(현지시간) 타임스오브이스라엘 등 현지 언론에 따르면 이스라엘군은 이날 라파전황 브리핑을 통해 "지금까지 라파에 있던 하마스 전투부대 절반을 무력화하고 최소 550여 명의 무장대원을 제거했다"고 밝혔습니다.

이스라엘군은 지난달 6일 라파 동부지역에 민간인 대피령을 내리면서 본격적인 공격을 개시했습니다.

이스라엘군은 "지금까지 제거한 무장대원 550명은 물리적으로 식별이 가능한 하마스 등의 전투 요원이었다"며 "그 밖에 건물과 터널 공습 과정에서 더 많은 공작원이 숨졌다"고 설명했습니다.

이어 하마스의 라파지역 여단 소속 4개 대대 가운데 남부,온카지노 검증동부지역 담당 대대가 거의 완전히 해체됐고 북부와 서부를 담당하는 나머지 2개 대대의 전력도 약화했을 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.

이스라엘군은 또 라파 작전 과정에서 이스라엘 중부를 겨냥한 장거리 로켓 등 1백여 기의 로켓 발사대를 발견하고 2백 여 개의 지하 터널 입구도 확인했으며 이 가운데 25곳은 국경 넘어 이집트의 시나이반도로 연결되는 밀수 통로라고 추정했습니다.

이스라엘은 라파에 하마스 지도부와 잔당이 은신한 것으로 추정하고 있으며 이곳을 장악해야만 하마스 제거,인질 구출,가자지구발 안보 위협 해소 등 전쟁 목표를 달성할 수 있다고 주장하고 있습니다.

미국을 비롯한 국제사회는 라파 시가전이 벌어질 경우 엄청난 민간인 피해가 우려된다며 작전을 반대했지만 이스라엘은 끝내 시가전을 강행했습니다.

이 과정에서 지금까지 수백 명의 민간인이 목숨을 잃었고 이스라엘군에서도 22명의 전사자가 발생했습니다.
