조 의원은 11일 자신의 페이스북에 쓴 글에서 국민의힘 당대표 후보 1차 TV토론 'OX 코너' 당시 사진을 게재하며 "가발은 죄가 아니다.대머리인 분들의 고충은 심하다"고 썼다.이어 "문제는 이게 여당 전당대회 이슈라는 점이다.코미디"라고 꼬집기도 했다.

사진은 당권주자들이 OX 팻말을 들어 정치 현안에 대한 찬반을 가리는 코너였다.'한동훈 후보의 머리카락은 가발인가?'라는 질문이 나오자 4인의 후보 중 3인이 O 팻말을 들었는데,야구 아시안게임 금메달한동훈 후보만 'X' 팻말을 든 모습이다.

그러나 해당 사진은 한 누리꾼이 만든 가짜 이미지다.조 의원도 게시글을 올린 지 얼마 지나지 않아 도로 삭제했다.합성 이미지를 실제로 착각했다가 뒤늦게 알아차린 것으로 보인다.조 대표의 지지자들도 "대표님 낚이셨네요" 등 안타깝다는 반응을 보이기도 했다.

해당 코너에선 "김건희 여사가 (명품백 수수 정황을) 사과했다면 총선 결과가 달라졌다고 생각하는가",야구 아시안게임 금메달"정권 재창출을 위해 윤석열 대통령과 차별화해야 하는가" 등의 질문이 나왔다.

한편 조 대표 자신이 가짜뉴스의 표적이 된 일도 있다.앞서 한 누리꾼이 엑스(X)에 조 대표를 사칭한 계정을 만들어 "일주일 전에 벗은 팬티가 혁신"이라며 대한축구협회를 비판하는 게시글을 올린 것이다.

실제 일부 언론은 이 내용을 인용한 기사를 내기도 했다.이에 대해 조 대표는 직접 "기사가 인용한 계정은 저를 사칭한 것"이라며 "저는 X를 사용하지 않는다"고 해명한 바 있다.
