한국전자통신연구원(ETRI)이 국제전기통신연합(ITU)의 메타버스(3차원 가상세계) 포커스그룹 활동을 통해 52건의 사전국제표준 승인 성과를 거뒀다.

ETRI는 최근 스위스 제네바에서 열린 '제7차 메타버스 포커스그룹 회의'에서 의장인 ETRI 강신각 박사 주재로 21건의 사전표준문서가 승인됐다고 9일 밝혔다.

이로써 1년 6개월에 걸친 메타버스 포커스그룹 의장 활동을 통해 총 52건의 사전표준문서가 최종 승인됐다.

유례를 찾아볼 수 없는 실적으로,짧은 활동 기간을 고려할 때 더욱 놀라운 성과라고 ITU는 평가했다.

ETRI는 메타버스 개요,플랫폼 상호운용성,야구 도쿄올림픽디지털트윈 기반 가상-현실 세계 통합 등에 관한 6개의 표준문서를 주도적으로 개발했다.

이와 함께 메타버스 정의·용어집,플랫폼 간 사물 식별정보 상호운용성,신뢰할 수 있는 메타버스 등 표준문서를 국내·외 공동으로 개발,야구 도쿄올림픽메타버스 시장을 선점하는 데 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

메타버스 포커스그룹은 한국(ETRI)이 제안,야구 도쿄올림픽2022년 12월 'ITU-T 전기통신자문그룹'(TSAG) 회의에 참여한 국가 대표와 산업체 회원 기관의 만장일치로 설립됐다.ETRI 강신각 박사가 의장으로 단독 추천돼 선임됐다.

방승찬 원장은 "우리나라가 의장국으로서 관련 국제표준화 활동을 주도하면서 메타버스 표준화에 대한 우리나라의 영향력이 크게 높아졌다"고 평가했다.

이번 성과는 오는 10월 열리는 'ITU-T 세계표준총회'(WTSA-2024)를 거쳐 차기 연구 회기(2025~2028년)에 추진할 메타버스 표준개발 활동의 기반으로 활용된다.
