월스트리트저널(WSJ)과 미국의소리(VOA) 등에 따르면 뉴욕 맨해튼 형사법원은 2일(현지시각) 오는 11일로 예정돼 있던 트럼프 전 대통령의 성추문 입막음돈 사건 선고공판을 9월18일로 연기했다.11월 대선과 한층 가까운 시점이다.

원래 공판이었던 11일은 15~18일 열릴 공화당 전당대회 직전이다.이 사건과 관련해서는 뉴욕 법원 배심원단이 34개 관련 혐의에 관해 만장일치로 유죄 평결을 내렸다.이후 1심에서는 형량 선고만을 남겨둔 상황이었다.

그러나 트럼프 전 대통령은 미국 연방대법원이 자신의 대선 전복 시도 혐의와 관련해 일부 면책특권을 인정하자 이를 근거로 성추문 입막음돈 사건과 관련해서도 선고 연기를 요청했다.검찰도 선고 연기에 반대하지는 않았다고 한다.

다만 성추문 입막음돈 사건은 연방대법원이 면책특권을 인정한 대선 전복 시도 혐의와는 별개 사건이다.이 때문에 선고공판이 미뤄진다고 해서 이미 나온 배심원단 평결 및 향후 형량 선고에 직접적인 영향을 미칠지는 확실하지 않다.

한편 CNN에 따르면 뉴욕주 항소법원은 이날 트럼프 전 대통령 측근인 뉴욕시장 출신 루디 줄리아니의 주 변호사 자격을 박탈했다.트럼프 전 대통령의 2020년 대선 결과 전복 시도와 관련해 거짓말을 퍼뜨렸다는 이유다.

법원은 "(줄리아니의) 위법행위의 심각성은 더는 강조할 수가 없다"라며 그가 트럼프 전 대통령을 도와 노골적으로 지위를 남용하고 법원과 대중 등에 반복적이며 고의적인 거짓 진술을 했다고 지적했다．
