김해연구원 설립은 2022년 인구 50만 이상 기초자치단체에 설립할 수 있도록 관련 법률을 개정하며 가능해졌다.

김재원 원장은 "시 미래 100년을 향한 정책개발과 함께 김해시가 국제적인 역량을 갖춘 지자체로 거듭날 수 있도록 모든 역량을 결집하겠다"고 밝혔다.
