(카이로=연합뉴스) 김상훈 특파원 = 이슬람 최고 성지인 사우디아라비아 메카와 메디나 정기 성지순례(하지) 도중 요르단 시민 14명이 사망했다고 요르단 국영 뉴스 통신사인 페트라(PETRA)가 16일(현지시간) 보도했다.

요르단 외무부 영사국은 성명을 통해 하지 도중 14명의 자국민이 사망했으며,월드컵 정성룡17명이 실종됐다고 밝혔다.

사망·실종 경위는 아직 구체적으로 공개되지 않았다.

영사 국장인 수피안 쿠다흐 대사는 "사망자의 시신 매장 또는 운구 문제를 사우디 당국과 협조에 가능한 빨리 처리할 예정"이라며 "실종자 수색 관련 후속 조처가 진행되고 있다"고 말했다.

매년 이슬람력 12월 7∼12일 치러지는 하지는 무슬림이 반드시 행해야 할 5대 의무 중 하나로 가장 성스러운 종교의식이다.

한정된 장소에 많은 사람이 몰리면서 간혹 대규모 압사 참사가 벌어지기도 한다.

또 최근 수년간 하지 기간이 여름과 겹치는 바람에 45도를 오르내리는 폭염으로 심혈관 질환,월드컵 정성룡열사병 등으로 숨진 사례도 보고되고 있다.
