김형석 신임 독립기념관장이 "정부로부터 임명받았고 성실하게 관장직을 수행하겠다고 약속한 마당에 물러설 이유가 전혀 없다"며 재차 사퇴 불가 입장을 확고히 밝혔다.

그는 자신을 둘러싼 친일 논란 등에 대해서 "역사학자로서 개인의 생각은 바뀐 것이 없다"며 "다만 이제는 독립기념관장으로서 입장이 달라졌기 때문에 의사 정책 등을 할 때 정부 관료나 기념관 담당자 등과 논의해 결정할 것"이라고 말했다.

앞서 이날 오전 더불어민주당 국회의원 등 10여 명은 뉴라이트 인사로 지목된 김형석 독립기념관장의 임명 절차 적법성을 확인하기 위해 충남 천안의 독립기념관을 찾았다.

그러나 기념관측이 국회의원들의 서면 자료 열람을 거부,2018년 10월 14일 야구 경기일정국회의원들은 결국 빈손으로 돌아갔다.
