'구름 위의 레이스'로 불리는 파이크스 피크 힐클라임은 로키산맥 파이크스 피크 봉우리를 오르내리는 미국에서 두 번째로 오래된 모터스포츠 대회다.해발 2862m에서 시작해 4302m 결승선까지 총길이 19.99㎞의 오르막 구간에 총 156개의 굴곡진 코너가 자리했다.

아이오닉 5 N은 대회 익스히비션(전시) 부문에 양산형 전기 스포츠유틸리티차차량(SUV)과 크로스오버 개조·비개조 차량으로 참가했다.

아이오닉 5 N 개조 차량으로는 험난한 레이스에 최적으로 세팅한 '아이오닉 5 N TA(타임어택) Spec'이 출전해 9분 30.852초의 기록으로 완주에 성공했다.양산형 전기차 개조 차량 세단 최고 기록인 9분 54.901초를 경신하며 최고 기록을 세웠다.

아이오닉 5 N TA Spec은 올해 참가 차량 중 익스히비션 부문 1위뿐만 아니라 종합순위 3위를 차지하며 높은 기록으로 대회를 마무리했다.

비개조 차량으로 참가한 아이오닉 5 N은 10분 49.267초의 기록으로 결승선을 통과해 기존 비개조 양산형 전기차 세단 최고 기록인 11분 2.801초를 넘어섰다.

현대차 관계자는 “다양한 모터스포츠 활동을 통해 N 브랜드의 기술력을 알리고 이를 통한 기술 개발로 고객들이 원하는 차량을 선보일 수 있도록 노력하겠다”고 말했다.
