당직근무는 재난안전상활실로 통합 운영되며 전담인력이 대신한다.광주시는 재난안전실 인력을 기존 6명에서 9명으로 늘려 3인 1조 형태로 24시간 근무 뒤 이틀 휴식 방식으로 당직민원과 재난대응 업무를 병행할 계획이다.

또 효율적인 당직민원 처리를 위해 KT와 협업해 인공지능(AI) 당직민원처리 시스템을 구축하고 시범운영을 거친 뒤 다음 달부터 정식 운영할 계획이다.

광주시의 당직 폐지는 1986년 11월 직할시 승격이후 38년만이다.

기존에는 5급 이하 직원들이 부서 업무를 수행한 뒤 3인 1조로 오후 6시부터 다음날 오전 9시까지 당직업무를 수행했다.
