초복인 오늘(15일) 오전 11시 대구 북구 칠성 개시장.

이른 점심시간부터 보신탕 식당을 찾는 손님들의 발길이 이어졌습니다.

주로 60∼70대로 보이는 남성들이 삼삼오오 모여 개시장을 찾았습니다.

식당마다 빈 테이블들은 30여 분이 지나자 손님으로 가득 찼습니다.

직원들은 더위에 땀을 흘리며 연기가 모락모락 나는 뚝배기를 분주히 날랐습니다.

'테이블 만석'에도 개시장 상인들은 굳은 표정이었습니다.

다음 달부터 시행되는 개식용종식법에 따라 식용 목적의 개 사육,슬롯 커뮤 박자도살,슬롯 커뮤 박자유통 등이 전면 금지되기 때문입니다.

법 위반에 대한 처벌은 2027년 2월부터 이뤄질 예정입니다.

건강원을 운영하는 70대 A 씨는 올해부터는 개고기를 구하기 어려워졌다며 2026년까지는 장사를 할 생각인데 그 이후로는 참 막막하다고 한숨을 쉬었습니다.

그러면서 육견협회에서도 정부에 지원책을 촉구하던데 원하는 것만큼 보상이 이루어졌으면 한다고 덧붙였습니다.

칠성 개시장은 한때 부산 구포시장,슬롯 커뮤 박자성남 모란시장과 함께 전국 3대 개시장으로 불렸습니다.

현재는 식당과 건강원 등 12곳 남짓 남아 있습니다.

개식용종식법 처벌이 본격적으로 이뤄지는 2027년부터는 남은 곳도 문을 닫을 것으로 보입니다.

북구에 따르면 칠성 개시장 상인들 모두 지난 5월 마감된 전·폐업 지원 신고를 완료한 상태입니다.

북구 관계자는 전·폐업 지원 방안은 농림축산식품부에서 일괄적으로 검토하고 있어서 추후 지침을 기다리는 상황이라고 전했습니다.

그러면서 개 식용 종식법이 만들어지고 나서 칠성 개시장과 관련된 민원이 거의 없다시피 할 정도로 줄었다고 덧붙였습니다.
