전자담배도 일반 담배처럼 당뇨병 위험을 높인단 연구 결과가 나왔습니다.

전자담배와 일반 담배를 섞어 피울 경우 그 위험은 훨씬 더 커졌습니다.

박광식 의학전문기자가 설명하겠습니다.

[리포트]

40대 직장인 이 모 씨.

15년 동안 연초형 일반 담배를 피우다,멕시코 축구선수5년 전 전자담배로 바꿨습니다.

전자담배가 건강에 덜 해롭다는 주변 이야기를 듣고 나섭니다.

[이OO/전자담배 흡연자 : "전자담배로 바꾸고 나서는 가슴이 답답하거나 그런 것들이 줄었고 목에서 검은 가래가 나온다거나 그런 것들도 상당히 줄었습니다."]

전자담배가 실제로 질병 위험을 낮추는 것일까?

가톨릭대와 서울대 공동연구팀이 성인 46만 명을 분석한 결과 비흡연자보다 전자담배 흡연자는 15%,멕시코 축구선수일반담배 흡연자는 22% 정도 당뇨병 위험이 더 높았습니다.

전자담배도 일반담배처럼 당뇨병 위험을 높이는 건데 '니코틴'을 흡입하는 원리는 같기 때문입니다.

[김승주/가톨릭대 간호학과 교수 : "'전자담배가 조금 안전할 것이다'라고 생각하지만 사실 '니코틴'이라고 하는 게 빠져있지는 않은 거죠.그래서 니코틴이라고 하는 것의 영향으로 인슐린 저항성에 영향을 미치면서 결국은 당뇨와 관련된…."]

특히 전자담배와 일반 담배를 섞어 피우는 '다중흡연자'의 경우 당뇨병 위험이 최대 39%까지 치솟았습니다.

단독으로 피울 때보다 유해성이 더 높아지는 결과입니다.

국내 흡연자의 약 40%는 '다중흡연자'.

전문가들은 금연이 최선이라면서도,멕시코 축구선수여러 종류의 담배를 함께 피운다면 한 종류라도 중단하는 것이 우선이라고 강조합니다.
