애플페이 <사진=연합뉴스>영국 금융당국이 애플페이,구글페이,페이팔 등 간편결제 서비스를 영위하는 빅테크 기업에 대한 조사에 나선다.

15일(현지시간) 로이터 통신에 따르면 이날 영국 금융감독청(FCA)과 결제 시스템 규제기관(PSR)은 빅테크 기업의 간편결제 서비스에 대한 조사를 진행할 예정이라고 밝혔다.

간편결제 서비스 시장의 경쟁 구조,소비자 보호,시장 건전성 등을 조사한다는 방침이다.당국은 특히 소비자들이 특정 간편결제 외의 다른 지불 옵션을 선택할 수 있는지 등 독점 여부를 들여다볼 예정이다.

당국은 이날 성명을 통해 “현재 영국 성인 절반 이상이 간편결제 서비스를 이용하면서 이는 빅테크 기업과 영국 소비자들의 중요한 접점이 되고 있다”며 이같이 밝혔다.

니킬 라티 영국 FCA 청장은 “간편결제 시장의 성장은 획기적인 전환으로 사람들의 결제 방식을 완전히 바꿔놓을 것”이라며 “동시에 해당 기술에 내포된 위험으로부터 시민들을 보호하기 위해 당국의 행동양식도 바뀔 것”이라고 강조했다.

미국에서도 간편결제가 확산되면서 빅테크 기업이 금융기관이 적용받는 것과 유사한 규제를 적용받아야 한다는 주장이 나오고 있다.

미국 소비자금융보호국(CFPB)은 작년 11월 애플페이,저장 프로 순위구글페이,페이팔,캐시앱 등 간편결제 서비스를 제공하는 빅테크 기업의 개인정보 보호,컴플라이언스(준법 감시) 등 여부를 감시해야 한다고 제안한 바 있다.

영국 당국은 내년 1분기까지 빅테크 기업에 조사 결과를 고지할 계획이다.
