9일 관련 업계에 따르면 천리안 운영사 미디어로그는 최근 공지를 통해 오는 10월 31일 서비스를 종료한다고 밝혔다.미디어로그 측은 "천리안과 함께했던 포털 서비스들이 하나,수리남 카지노둘 종료하는 시장 상황에서도 서비스를 지속하고자 노력했지만 사업 환경의 변화에 따라 더 이상 양질의 메일 서비스를 유지하기 어려워 서비스 종료라는 쉽지 않은 결정을 내리게 됐다"고 설명했다.

천리안은 오는 11일 메일·주소록 백업 기능을 연 뒤 메일 자동전달·메일주소 변경 안내 신청을 받아 이용자의 자료 저장과 이메일 이전을 지원할 예정이다.이어 8월 1일 천리안 기본료를 무료로 전환하고 9월 1일 문자메시지(SMS),수리남 카지노뉴스(동영상) 등 부가 서비스 종료,10월 1일 천리안 메일 수·발신 중지를 거쳐 10월 31일 서비스를 완전히 종료한다.

PC통신은 개인용 컴퓨터(PC)를 다른 컴퓨터와 통신 회선으로 연결해 정보를 주고 받는 것을 말한다.1980년대 천리안과 케텔(KETEL·하이텔의 전신)이 탄생하면서 국내에 사이버 세계를 처음 선보였다.1990년대 PC통신 내 게시판이 활발하게 운영되며 황금기를 누렸지만 2000년대 들어 인터넷이 활성화하면서 이용자가 급감했다.일부는 포털 서비스 등으로 전향했지만 예전의 명성을 회복하지는 못했다.
