CDMA 기술 IEEE 마일스톤 등재 기념 현판식

(대전=연합뉴스) 박주영 기자 = 한국전자통신연구원(ETRI)은 11일 원내에서 코드분할다중접속(CDMA) 상용화 기술의 IEEE 마일스톤(이정표) 등재 기념식을 열었다.

CDMA 개발에 참여한 전·현직 연구원을 초청한 가운데 열린 이번 행사는 양승택 전 정보통신부 장관의 축사와 IEEE 마일스톤 등재 기념 동판(Plaque) 현판식 등 순으로 진행됐다.

앞서 SK텔레콤은 ETRI,라스트 쉬프트삼성전자,라스트 쉬프트LG전자와 함께 진행한 CDMA 대규모 상용화가 세계 최대 전기·전자공학회인 국제전기전자공학협회(IEEE)가 선정하는 IEEE 마일스톤에 등재됐다고 전날 밝혔다.

IEEE 마일스톤은 전기·전자·전산 분야에서 인류에 기여한 의미 있는 성과를 기념해 주는 상으로,라스트 쉬프트성과 발생 25년 이후 등재 신청이 가능하다.

그간 북미·유럽·일본과 같은 기술 강국이 차지해왔으나,한국 기술이 등재된 것은 이번이 처음이다.

ETRI는 1996년 한국이동통신(현 SK텔레콤)과 공동으로 통화 용량을 아날로그 방식보다 10배 이상 늘릴 수 있는 CDMA 기술 개발을 완료,삼성전자와 LG전자 등 국내 단말기 제조사들이 협력해 CDMA를 국가표준으로 단일화하고 세계 최초로 상용화하는 데 성공했다.

방승찬 ETRI 원장은 "이번 IEEE의 마일스톤 등재는 우리나라 연구진의 CDMA 기술 상용화가 선진국으로부터 기술력을 인정받은 최초의 사례"라며 "이번에 받은 기념 동판은 ETRI 역사관에 영구 보존될 것"이라고 말했다.
