12일 서울중앙지검은 이 전 대표의 변론 병합 신청과 관련해 지난 10일 대법원 및 서울중앙지법에 '변론 병합 반대 의견서'를 제출했다고 밝혔다.

수원지법에서 심리하는 쌍방울 대북송금 사건은 이 전 대표가 경기도지사였던 2018년 7월 이후에 벌어진 것이고,월드컵 박치기 사건서울중앙지법 심리 사건은 그보다 수년 앞선 성남시장 재직 당시의 일이다.검찰은 이처럼 범행 시기와 쟁점 및 관련자들이 전혀 상이한 탓에 병합이 불가능하다는 취지를 의견서에 담았다.

오히려 중앙지법에서 심리 중인 사건 중 위례·대장동 사건은 이른바 '대장동 3인방'으로 불리는 김만배·남욱·정영학 등 관련자가 같고,월드컵 박치기 사건범행 시기와 쟁점 및 사건 구조가 유사해 오히려 변론을 분리해 직접 심리한 재판부가 해당 사건을 먼저 선고할 필요성이 높다고 검찰은 설명했다.

서울중앙지검 관계자는 "변론 분리 및 선고를 고려해야 할 상황에서 전혀 무관한 사건을 병합한다면 심리 지연으로 인해 신속한 재판 진행의 원칙에 반하고 아울러 실체적 진실발견에 상당한 지장을 초래할 것"이라며 "피고인의 병합 신청은 오로지 재판 지연과 선고 회피를 위한 신청으로 허용돼서는 안 된다"고 강조했다.
