지구 상공에서 온실가스를 관측할 수 있는 초소형 국산 관측위성의 개발이 추진된다.

환경부 소속 국립환경과학원은 2027년까지 초소형 온실가스 관측 위성 5기를 개발하고,2027년에 1호기,2028년에 2~5호기를 연이어 발사할 계획이라고 2일 밝혔다.

이는 지난해 3월 발표된 '제1차 국가 탄소중립·녹색성장 기본계획(2023~2042)'에 따른 정책이다.개발에는 대표적 방산기업이자 위성 관련기술을 다수 확보하고 있는 한화시스템이 참여한다.

이번에 개발되는 온실가스 관측 위성(가칭 K-GHG SAT)은 총중량 50kg 이하 초소형 위성으로 고도 600km 이하 저궤도를 돌며 이산화탄소와 메탄(메테인) 농도를 초분광 기술을 활용해 관측한다.

초분광 기술은 빛의 파장을 수백 개 이상 스펙트럼으로 잘게 쪼개 눈에 보이지 않는 온실가스를 관측할 수 있도록 해준다.이 기술은 대기·토양의 오염 여부 판별,도박동가뭄·홍수 등 재해 탐지·분석,농작물 작황 정보 분석 등 다방면에서 활용되고 있다.

특히 우리나라가 2020년 발사해 운용 중인 세계 최초의 정지궤도 환경위성에서도 초분광 기술이 쓰이고 있다.

온실가스 관측 위성의 기본 임무는 △온실가스 배출원 위치 식별,도박동△온실가스 배출량 산정이다.이밖에 △국가·지자체 온실가스 감축 정책 지원,△기후위기 적응대책 수립 지원,△국가 온실가스 통계 검증,△기후테크 기술 개발 지원 등에 적극 활용될 예정이다.

국립환경과학원 환경위성센터에서는 온실가스 관측 위성의 관측 폭을 고려해,도박동한반도가 촘촘히 관측될 수 있도록 5기의 위성을 군집으로 운영할 계획이다.
