대법원 양형위원회가 동물을 죽이거나 죽음에 이르게 하는 범죄를 저지를 경우 최대 징역 3년형의 처벌을 내릴 수 있는 내용을 골자로 하는 동물보호법 위반 범죄 양형 기준을 신설했다.반려동물을 키우는 인구가 급증하면서 동물학대 처벌 수위가 낮다는 지적이 이어지자 국민 눈높이에 맞는 양형 기준을 새로 설정한 것이다.

대법원은 양형위가 지난 17일 제132차 전체회의를 열고 동물보호법 위반 범죄에 대한 양형 기준 설정안에 합의했다고 18일 밝혔다.양형 기준은 일선 판사들이 판결을 내릴 때 참고하는 일종의 가이드라인이다.

양형위는 이번 회의를 통해 두 가지 유형에 대한 양형 기준을 신설했다.먼저 목을 매다는 등 잔인한 방법으로 동물을 죽이거나 죽음에 이르게 하는 행위를 할 경우 3년 이하의 징역 또는 3000만원 이하의 벌금형에 처하도록 설정했다.
