AP통신에 따르면 WHO는 멕시코의 가금류에서 H5N2 조류인플루엔자 바이러스 감염 사례를 확인했지만,숨진 사람이 어떻게 감염됐는지 여부는 명확하지 않다고 설명했다.

사망자는 59세 남성으로 가금류나 다른 동물에 노출된 사실이 없는데도 이 바이러스에 감염됐다고 한다.

다만 이 남성은 만성 신부전·당뇨병·고혈압 등 기저질환을 앓고 있었던 것으로 전해진다.

이 남성은 올해 4월17일부터 발열·호흡곤란·설사 증상을 보였으며,누누 칼바람같은달 24일 병원 치료를 받았으나 그날 결국 사망했다.

이후 이 남성에 대한 초기 검사에서 미확인 유형의 독감이라는 사실을 파악했고,이후 몇 주 간의 추가 검사를 통해 H5N2 조류인플루엔자 바이러스라는 것이 확인됐다.

WHO는 멕시코 내에서의 전염성은 낮으며,사망자의 집과 사망자가 치료를 받은 병원에서도 추가 감염 사례는 발견되지 않았다고 밝혔다.

올해 3월 멕시코 당국은 멕시코 주변 지역에 있는 가금류에서 H5N2 감염 사례 3건을 확인했지만,누누 칼바람인간과의 연관성은 찾지 못했다.당국은 멕시코시티 외곽의 호수 근처에서 조류를 모니터링하고 있다고 한다.

조류 인플루엔자는 여러 유형이 있다.최근 미국에서 축산업계 종사자 등 3명이 감염된 것으로 확인된 바이러스는 고병원성 조류 인플루엔자(H5N1)로,H5N2와 다른 것이다.

미국 질병통제예방센터(CDC)에 따르면 지난 몇 년 간 전 세계적으로 조류 인플루엔자로 인해 사망한 사람은 총 18명이다.
