[아부자=AP/뉴시스] 이재준 기자 = 서아프리카 나이지리아 중북부에서 12일(현지시각) 학교 건물이 무너져 내리면서 수업 중이던 학생 22명이 목숨을 잃었다.

나이지리아 당국에 따르면 플라토주 부사 부지 지구 조스에 있는 세인트 아카데미 컬리지의 2층짜리 교사가 이날 아침 학생들이 등교한 직후에 무너져 이 같은 참사를 빚었다.

애초 붕괴한 건물 잔해에는 154명이 학생들이 깔렸는데 필사적인 구조노력 끝에 132명은 구출하는데 성공했지만 나머지는 숨졌다.

부상자는 인근 병원으로 치료를 받고 있다.죽거나 다친 학생들은 15세 미만의 청소년이라고 한다.

사고 후 굴착기까지 동원해 건물 잔해를 뒤져 학생들을 구출했으며 주민 수십명도 나서 구조를 도왔다.

나이지리아 국가재난청은 붕괴사고가 나자 바로 구조대와 의료진,프리미어리그 토트넘 홈보안군을 현장에 출동 배치해 구조작업을 신속히 펼쳤다고 밝혔다.

플라토주 정부는 사고 원인에 대해 학교 건물의 구조적 취약성과 강둑 근처에 있는 위치상 문제 때문이라고 지적하며 비슷한 위험이 있는 학교들에는 휴교를 지시했다.

아프리카 최대 인구국인 나이지리아에서는 건물 붕괴가 지난 2년간 12건 이상 발생했을 정도로 흔한 일이다.

당국은 이런 사고의 원인으로 건물 안전규정을 제대로 지키지 않고 유지보수도 소홀히 하는 점을 지적했다.
