미국에 기록적인 폭염이 이어지면서 워싱턴의 한 초등학교에 설치된 에이브러햄 링컨 동상이 녹아내렸다.

26일 워싱턴포스트(WP)에 따르면 워싱턴DC 개리슨초등학교에서 세워진 링컨 동상이 3일 연속 이어진 폭염으로 녹아 허물어졌다.

WP는 "월요일 아침,알라베스 대 아틀레틱그의 머리가 사라지고 왼쪽 다리는 몸통과 분리됐다"고 설명했다.동상의 머리는 녹아 뒤로 젖혀진 모습이다.

해당 동상은 6피트(1.8m) 높이로 리치몬드대학 예술대 교수 샌디 윌리엄스 4세의 작품이다.지난 2월 개리슨초등학교에 설치됐다.

이에 윌리엄스도 "주변 온도가 화씨 140도(섭씨 60도)에 이르지 않는 한 이 조각품이 녹지 않을 것으로 판단했다"며 "최근 화씨 100도(섭씨 37.8도)가 넘는 날씨에 어떤 공격이 더해졌을 지도 모르겠다"고 말했다.

최근 미국에서는 북동부와 중서부 지역을 중심으로 30도 후반대의 기온이 계속되는 폭염이 이어지고 있다.
