인천광역시가 '세계 최고 수준의 바이오 첨단클러스터'를 조성해 국가 바이오산업을 견인하게 됐다.

시는 27일 산업통상자원부 주관 '바이오분야 국가첨단전략산업 특화단지' 공모에 최종 선정됐다고 밝혔다.

앞서 정부는 2022년 8월 '국가첨단전략산업 경쟁력 강화 및 보호에 관한 특별조치법(첨단전략산업법)'이 시행됨에 따라 지난해 3개 산업에 이어 올해 '바이오분야 특화단지' 지정을 공모계획을 발표했다.

전국 11개 지방자치단체가 공모신청서를 제출한 가운데 '인천-시흥 컨소시엄' 등 총 5개 지자체가 특화단지 지역으로 최종 선정했다.

시는 바이오 특화단지 지정으로 인해 기존 바이오산업 중심지인 송도와 함께 영종도 유보지를 신규 투자지역으로,회기 벨리스남동공단을 바이오 소부장 핵심지역으로 개발할 수 있는 발판을 마련했다고 평가했다.

또 서울대가 위치한 인근 배곧경제자유구역 등 시흥시와의 광역 연계를 통해 국내 최고 수준의 연구개발(R&D) 기반시설(인프라)을 보유한 서울대 및 향후 지어질 서울대병원 등 다양한 연구기관과의 시너지도 기대할 수 있게 됐다.

유정복 시장은 "특화단지가 조성되면 국가 바이오산업의 혁신을 이끌어 바이오강국 대한민국 도약의 주축이 될 것"이라며 "바이오의약품 기술개발과 함께 강소기업의 발굴·육성 및 해외 유수 기업 유치로 세계 초일류도시 인천의 위상을 널리 알릴 것"이라고 말했다.
