서욱석 육군 공보과장은 이날 국방부 정례 언론브리핑에서 사망한 병사의 순직 결정 여부에 대해 “(군 당국과 민간 경찰이) 초기 조사를 진행하고 있고,브라이턴 & 호브 앨비언 fc 대 셰필드 유나이티드 라인업그 조사 결과를 바탕으로 이후에 순직 등에 대한 검토가 필요할 것”이라며 “현 단계에선 그 부분에 대해 언급할 수 없다”고 답했다.
서 과장은 최근 군내 사망 사건·사고가 잇따르는 데 대해 “해당 부서에서도 최근에 일어난 일련의 사안들에 대해서 면밀하게 분석을 하고 있다”고 설명했다.
