신 차관은 "이옥선 할머니는 위안부 생활의 후유증으로 인한 병환으로 길게 고생하시면서도 일본군 위안부 피해 사실을 알리기 위해 적극적으로 증언 활동을 하셨다"며 "또 한 분의 일본군 위안부 피해자를 떠나보내게 돼 매우 가슴 아프게 생각한다"고 밝혔다.

이어 "생전에 많은 풍파를 겪으셨던 만큼 평안을 찾으시길 바란다"며 "이제 정부에 등록된 피해자 중 생존자는 단 여섯 분에 불과하다.여성가족부는 일본군 위안부 피해자들께서 편안한 여생을 보내실 수 있도록 면밀히 살펴 지원하는 한편,2014 스즈키 익사이트 125피해자 분들의 명예와 존엄 회복을 위해 지속적으로 노력할 것"이라고 전했다.
