이렇게 되면 주 정부가 부과하는 세율은 내년 1월 1일부터 11%로 인상되고 하와이의 각 카운티에서 부과하는 별도의 3% 숙박세와 일반 소비세까지 더하면 투숙객이 결제 시 부과되는 총 세율은 약 18%에 달하게 됩니다.

하와이의 이번 세제 입안은 미국 주 정부 가운데 환경 보호와 기후 변화 대응을 위해 별도 세금을 부과하는 최초 사례라고 하는데요.

당국은 이렇게 거둬들인 세금을 와이키키 해변의 침식된 모래 보강과 허리케인 대비 장비 및 산불 대비 가연성 초목 제거 등에 사용한다는 계획입니다.
