고인은 1967년 경향신문 신춘문예에서 시‘빙하의 새’로 등단했다.강은교,김형영,박건한 등과 함께 시 동인지‘70년대’를 창간하기도 했다.
79년에는 한국일보 신춘문예에서 소설이 당선돼,이후 시인이자 소설가로 작품 활동을 했다.
고인은 생전에 “작가가 쓰는 것은 결국 한 권의 책이다.몇 권을 쓰든 어떻게 변주가 되고,오락실 토토 국내형다른 형태로 바뀌든,그건 결국 고향의 이야기,자신의 이야기였다”며 등단 50주년을 맞던 해에 자신의 단편·중편·장편을 총망라한 12권의‘윤후명 소설전집’을 발간한 바 있다.
시인으로 등단해 1979년부터 소설을 쓰기 시작하자,이어령 문학평론가가 “한 가지만 쓰라”고 충고했다고 한다.당시만 해도 문단에는 시나 소설,한 가지에만 집중하는 문화가 있었다.
이후 고인은 시를 접고 20년간 소설을 썼다.나중에는 “이제 마음 편히 시도 쓰고 소설도 쓰고 있다”며 시인이자 소설가의 삶을 마음껏 누리고 있음을 고백하기도 했다.
