(요하네스버그=연합뉴스) 유현민 특파원 = 아프리카 질병통제예방센터(CDC)가 13일(현지시간) 엠폭스(MPOX·옛 명칭 원숭이두창) 확산에 따른 공중보건 비상사태를 선포했다.

아프리카 CDC의 장 카세야 사무총장은 이날 온라인 기자회견에서 "아프리카 시민을 위해 무거운 마음으로 엠폭스를 아프리카 대륙의 공중보건 비상사태로 선언한다"고 밝혔다.

지난해 아프리카 CDC에 공중보건 비상사태 선포 권한이 부여된 이후 실제 이를 실행한 것은 이번이 처음이다.

아프리카 CDC에 따르면 아프리카 대륙 55개국 가운데 최소 16개국에서 엠폭스가 발병했다.

올해 들어 지금까지 아프리카에서 1만5천건 이상의 감염 사례와 461명의 사망자가 보고됐는데 작년 같은 기간보다 160% 증가했다.

엠폭스가 아프리카를 중심으로 확산하자 세계보건기구(WHO)도 14일 전문가를 소집해 최고 수준의 보건 경계태세를 다시 선언할지 검토하기로 했다.

WHO가 소집한 국제 보건규약 긴급위원회는 엠폭스 확산 규모와 속도,주요 발병지의 의료 대응 역량 및 질병 통제 수준 등을 두루 고려해 국제적 공중보건 비상사태(PHEIC) 선언이 필요한지를 판단할 것으로 보인다.

엠폭스는 급성 발열 발진성 질환으로 감염 시 수포성 발진이 나타나고 발열이나 두통,무제한 슬롯근육통 등의 증세를 보이는데 주로 피부나 체액·침방울 등을 통해 전염된다.

아프리카 지역 풍토병이지만 2022년 5월부터 다른 지역에서도 발병하기 시작,무제한 슬롯감염자 수가 급증하자 WHO는 같은 해 7월 PHEIC를 선언했다가 확산세가 잦아들자 10개월 만인 지난해 5월 해제했다.
