경기 화성시가 네덜란드 반도체 장비업체인 ASML이 차세대 노광장비(High NA EUV)를 활용한 삼성전자 초미세 반도체 제조 공정 지원 연구개발 시설을 유치했다고 4일 밝혔다.

정명근 화성시장은 방한 중인 프랭크 헤임스케르크 ASML 대외총괄부사장과 이날 화성시청에서 간담회를 갖고 연구시설 건립에 필요한 행정 지원을 약속했다.

ASML은 반도체 생산에 필요한 극자외선(EUV) 노광장비(반도체 기판에 설계대로 집적회로를 프린팅하는 장비)를 전 세계에서 유일하게 생산하는 반도체 장비 분야 1위 기업이다.

현재 화성 동탄2신도시에 반도체 장비 부품 제조센터와 엔지니어 트레이닝 센터 등 조성 사업을 추진 중이다.

정 시장은 "1조원이 투입되는 'ASML-삼성전자 연구지원시설' 건립 부지로 화성시를 선택해 주신 것에 감사드린다"면서 "화성에서 추진하는 ASML 프로젝트의 성공을 위해 각종 인허가부터 밀착 지원하는 원스톱 서비스를 제공하겠다"고 말했다.

이에 프랭크 헤임스케르크 부사장은 "화성시의 전폭적인 지원으로 'ASML 화성 뉴 캠퍼스' 조성이 계획대로 순조롭게 진행되는 것에 감사드린다"면서 "삼성전자는 ASML의 중요 고객사인 만큼 이번 연구지원시설 건립을 통해 양사 간의 기술 동맹을 돈독히 하겠다"고 전했다.

한편 ASML은 지난달 28일 'ASML-삼성전자 연구지원시설' 건립을 위해 한국토지주택공사와 부지 매입 계약을 체결한 바 있다.

이는 화성시가 K-반도체 핵심도시 도약을 위해 지난해 8월부터 피터 베닝크 전 ASML CEO를 비롯한 관계자와 지속해서 소통하면서 추가 투자를 요청한 데 따른 것이다.
