엔/달러 환율이 12일(현지시간) 뉴욕 외환시장에서 1.5엔가량 급락하자 일본 당국이 연이틀 시장 개입을 단행했다는 관측이 제기됐다.

교도통신과 니혼게이자이신문(닛케이)에 따르면 엔/달러 환율은 미국 노동부가 6월 미국의 생산자물가지수(PPI)가 전월 대비 0.2% 상승했다고 발표한 직후 큰 폭으로 변동했다.

엔/달러 환율은 PPI 발표 직후 158엔대 후반에서 157.3엔대까지 1.5엔가량 하락했다.

일본 시간으로 13일 오전 7시 현재 기준 환율은 157엔대 후반을 기록하고 있다.

교도통신은 "엔화 가치가 6월 중순 이후 약 3주 만에 가장 높은 수준"이라며 "시장에서는 일본 정부와 일본은행이 이틀 연속 시장 개입을 한 것이 아니냐는 견해가 나오고 있다"고 보도했다.

뉴욕 외환시장에서는 앞서 전날에도 미국 소비자물가지수(CPI) 발표 직후 엔/달러 환율이 161엔대에서 157엔대까지 4엔 이상 급락하면서 일본 당국의 시장 개입 가능성이 제기된 바 있다.

뉴욕 외환시장에서 엔/달러 환율이 떨어졌다가 이후 도쿄 외환시장에서 다시 오르자 일본 당국이 이틀 연속 시장에 개입해 이를 다시 끌어내린 것이 아니냐는 것이다.

이에 대해 일본 환율 정책을 지휘하는 간다 마사토 재무성 재무관은 이날 새벽 기자들과 만나 "개입 여부에 관해서는 할 말이 없다"고 밝혔다.

앞서 일본 당국은 4월 26일부터 5월 29일까지 약 한 달간 9조7천885억엔(약 84조7천억원) 규모의 시장 개입을 했다고 발표한 바 있다.
