미국프로농구(NBA)의 전설적 선수 제리 웨스트가 12일(현지시간) 자택에서 향년 86세로 세상을 떠났다고 로스앤젤레스 클리퍼스 구단이 발표했다.

1938년생인 웨스트는 60년 LA 레이커스에 입단해 74년까지 14년간 선수로 뛰는 동안 최고의 슈터 중 한 명으로 꼽혔다.NBA 명예의 전당에 3차례 헌액된 그는 선수가 드리블하는 모습을 형상화한 NBA 로고의 모델로도 알려져 있다.

웨스트의 활약 중 가장 대표적으로 회자되는 장면은 70년 뉴욕 닉스를 상대로 벌인 결승 3차전에서 보여준 버저비터다.그가 경기 종료 버저와 함께 60피트(약 18.29m) 밖에서 성공시킨 슛은 경기를 연장전으로 이끌었다.지금의 NBA 3점 라인 거리 23피트9인치(약 7.24m)보다 1.5배 먼 위치였다.당시는 3점 라인이 도입되기 전이었다.

웨스트는 윌트 체임벌린과 오스카 로버트슨과 함께 리그 최초로 2만5000점 득점 기록을 세운 선수다.

그는 은퇴 후 LA 레이커스에서 단장과 경영 부사장을 지냈다.멤피스 그리즐리스 단장 등을 거쳐 마지막으로 LA 클리퍼스 임원으로 재직했다.

웨스트는 한국계 미국인 프로 골퍼 미셸 위의 시아버지이기도 하다.
