2010년 6·2지방선거에서 두 지자체 통합을 공약으로 내걸었던 민주당 소속 후보들이 당선되면서 통합 논의가 재점화됐다.이후 2012년 6월 27일 실시된‘청주-청원 행정구역 통합 찬반 청원군 주민투표’에서 전체 유권자 12만240명 가운데 4만4191명이 투표(투표율 36.75%)해 찬성 3만4124표(77.2%),동행복권 파워볼반대 9813표(22.2%)로 통합이 확정됐다.청주시는 앞서 시의회 만장일치 의결로 통합을 결정했다.2004년 주민투표법 제정 이후 주민투표로 행정 구조를 개편한 것은 2005년 제주특별자치도에 이어 두 번째다.통합 청주시 인구는 외국인을 포함해 87만7204명(5월 말 기준)이다.면적은 941㎢이며,재정 규모는 3조2842억 원(2023년 당초 예산 기준),동행복권 파워볼재정자립도 27.9%다.행정구역은 4구,3읍,동행복권 파워볼10면,동행복권 파워볼30동이고 행정조직은 본청 7국 38과다.
