시는 옛 경인고속도로 인천 기점∼서인천IC 10.45㎞ 구간의 옹벽과 방음벽을 철거하고 중앙부에 공원·녹지와 여가 공간을 조성하는 사업을 추진 중이다.시는 도시재생을 위해 2019년 이 구간을 고속도로에서 일반도로로 전환하며 '인천대로'라는 이름을 붙였다.

옹벽과 방음벽이 철거되면 인천대로 곳곳에는 공원·녹지·여가 공간이 조성되고 일반도로처럼 교차로가 설치된다.1-1단계 구간 외에 인하대 후문∼주안산단 1-2단계 구간(3㎞)은 이달 초 착공했다.1단계 전체 구간 4.8㎞는 2027년까지 완공할 계획이다.

2단계 구간(주안산단∼서인천IC) 5.65㎞는 2030년 준공을 목표로 공사 발주를 준비 중이다.2단계 구간은 지상도로가 왕복 6차로에서 4차로로 줄어드는 점을 고려,카지노 한국인공단고가교∼서인천IC 4.5km 구간에 왕복 4차로 지하도로를 건설해 혼잡을 줄일 방침이다.
