지진을 몰고 온 듯한 이 소리.

지진으로 발생한 지진파인 'P파'가 지표면으로 나와 공기와 접촉하면서 난 소리입니다.

P파는 전달 속도가 빠른 반면,'S파'에 비해 흔들림은 적어 주민들이 지진보다 소리가 먼저 들렸다고 느낀 겁니다.

[이호준/KIT밸리 지진해일전문위원 : "지진에 의한 폭발음은 P파에 의해서 유발되기 때문에 우리가 실제 진동을 느끼는 S파보다 항상 먼저 들리게 돼 있습니다."]

지진으로 발생한 소리는 인간의 공포를 유발해 지진 강도를 더 크게 인식하게 한다는 해외 연구결과도 있습니다.

전문가들은 굉음에 당황하지 않고 침착하게 대응할 수 있도록 평소에 안전요령을 숙지해야 한다고 강조합니다.
