오늘 오전 경기도 화성의 리튬배터리 제조공장에서 불이나 지금까지 22명이 숨지고 8명이 다쳤습니다.

인명피해 규모가 더 커질 가능성도 있습니다.

시뻘건 화염 위로 검은 연기가 쉴새 없이 뿜어져 나옵니다.

경기 화성시 일차전지 제조공장에서 불이 난 건 오늘 오전 10시 반쯤입니다.

불은 공장 11개 동 중 주로 배터리 완성품 검수와 포장을 했던 3동 건물 2층에서 시작됐습니다.

이곳에 리튬 배터리 3만 5천여 개가 쌓여 있었는데 소방당국은 그 중 하나에서 폭발이 일어났다는 목격자 진술을 확보했습니다.

불이 난 곳에서 80여 미터 정도 떨어진 공장의 옥상입니다.폭발의 충격으로 이곳까지 원통형 배터리의 잔해가 날라왔습니다.

"연기만 올라오다가 처음에는 나중엔 펑펑 터지면서 박격포 떨어지는 소리가 나면서 그게 꽤 오랫동안 났거든요.거의 1시간 정도 계속‥"

사고 당시 공장에는 모두 102명이 일하고 있었던 것으로 알려진 가운데 현재까지 모두 22명이 숨지고 중상자 2명을 포함해 8명이 다친 걸로 확인됐습니다.

사망자 대부분은 불이 시작된 2층에서 발견됐습니다.

소방당국은 화재 발생 20여 분만에 인근 소방서에서 인력과 장비를 동원하는 대응 2단계를 발령해 진화에 나섰지만 배터리가 계속 폭발해 애를 먹었습니다.

"선착진 도착 당시에 내부에 있던 배터리셀이 연속적으로 폭발하면서 급속한 화재가 발생되어서 진화에 어려움을 겪고 있는 상황이고‥"

화재 발생 4시간 40여 분만인 오후 3시 10분쯤 큰 불길을 잡은 소방 당국은 실종자 수색과 마무리 진화 작업을 벌이고 있습니다.

경찰과 소방당국은 수색과 진화 작업이 끝나는 대로 화재 원인 조사에 나설 예정입니다.
