HTGR은 750℃의 고온열을 생산하는 원자로다.방사능에 오염되지 않는 헬륨을 냉각재로 쓰고 흑연을 감속재로 사용하는 게 특징이다.1600℃ 이상에서도 방사능이 방출되지 않는 삼중피복입자 핵연료(TRISO)도 사용한다.

고온가스로 개념도.[사진출처=포스코이앤씨]후쿠시마 사고와 같이 외부 전원이 상실되거나 운전원 조치가 불가능한 극한 사고에서도 자연냉각만으로 원자로의 안정성을 확보하고자 하는 기술이다.무탄소 고효율 전력생산과 수소생산에 활용히 가능해 4세대 원자로로 불린다.

이번 협약을 통해 포스코이앤씨는 한국원자력연구원이 개발한 HTGR 기술을 바탕으로 독자 노형 확보를 위한 공동연구에 매진한다.기술이전과 인력지원,던파 여캐 월드컵실증사업추진 등 영역에서도 협력할 방침이다.
