한반도에는 본격적인 장마가 시작됐습니다만 서인도제도 카리브해 동쪽 섬 지역은 허리케인 베릴이 강타해 큰 피해를 입었습니다.

카리브해를 지나며 체급이 커진 베릴은 역대 가장 이른 초대형 허리케인이란 기록도 세웠는데요

전문가들은 뜨거운 바닷물을 원인으로 꼽고 있습니다.

야자수가 길바닥에 힘없이 쓰러져 있고 길거리는 잔해로 뒤덮여있습니다.

침수된 바닷가 산책로를 아슬아슬하게 자동차가 지나갑니다.

대표적인 휴양지 바베이도스를 포함해 카리브해 동쪽 섬 지역에 허리케인 베릴이 상륙하면서 통신이 끊기고 건물이 파손되는 등 피해를 냈습니다.

미국 국립허리케인센터가 생명을 위협한다고 경고하고 있는 베릴은 역대 가장 이른 4등급 이상 허리케인이란 기록도 남겼습니다.

2005년 7월에 발생했던 데니스의 기록을 깬 겁니다.

이렇게 베릴이 성급하게 덩치를 키운 배경으로 전문가들은 뜨거운 바닷물을 꼽고 있습니다.
