이처럼 미국의 우주왕복선 사업을 민간 기업들이 주도하게 된 건 과거 사고에 따른 충격과 예산 부담 때문이었는데요.

민간 기업과 함께 우주 탐사에 나선 미국,그리고 관 주도로 이뤄지는 중국 간의 우주 패권 경쟁이 치열해지고 있습니다.

이어서 박석호 기자입니다.

[리포트]

인류를 달에 보낸 아폴로 우주선 운용이 막대한 비용 부담으로 어려워지자,미 항공우주국 나사는 여러 차례 재사용이 가능한 우주왕복선 개발에 나섭니다.

로켓 추진력으로 이륙했다가 비행기처럼 착륙을 하고 다시 우주로 나서는 우주왕복선의 시대는 1981년 막을 열었습니다.

모두 5대가 제작된 우주왕복선은 국제우주정거장 등을 오가며 135차례나 우주 임무를 수행했습니다.

하지만 1986년에는 챌린저호가,2003년에는 컬럼비아호가 폭발하며 14명의 우주인이 목숨을 잃기도 했습니다.

게다가 예산 부담도 크게 줄지 않자 나사는 2011년 우주왕복선 운용을 중단합니다.

이후 보잉과 스페이스X 등 민간 기업이 우주왕복선 사업을 이어받으며 민간 우주 시대가 열렸습니다.

대신 나사는 달에 유인기지를 건설하고 화성을 탐사하는 새로운 임무,아르테미스 계획에 착수했습니다.

최근 세계 처음으로 달 뒷면에서 토양을 채취한 중국 역시 2030년까지 달에 유인 연구기지를 건설하겠다고 밝혔습니다.

민간기업과 함께 나선 미국과 관 주도의 중국 간 우주 패권 경쟁은 갈수록 치열해지고 있습니다.
