우리나라 질병관리청의 2022년 발표(연구는 2020년 기준)에 따르면 한국인의 44.9%가 비타민제를 먹는 것으로 알려진 가운데 미국에서 종합 비타민제를 챙겨 먹는 것이 건강과 수명 연장에 도움이 안 된다는 연구 결과가 나왔습니다.

영국 가디언 등은 현지시간 26일 미 국립 암 연구소(NCI)의 관련 최신 연구 결과를 소개했습니다.

연구소의 연구원들은 "수명 연장을 위해 종합 비타민제를 복용하는 것을 지지하지 않는다"는 입장을 밝혔습니다.

이번 연구를 위해 NCI의 에리카 로프트필드 박사와 동료들은 미국 성인 20여 년간 누적된 약 40만 명의 데이터를 분석했습니다.

그 결과 매일 종합 비타민제를 먹었을 때 심장병이나 암과 같은 다른 질환으로 인한 사망 위험을 줄일 수 있다는 것에 대한 증거를 찾을 수 없었습니다.

연구 기간 초기 참가자 39만여 명 중 약 16만 5000명이 사망했습니다.그런데 매일 종합 비타민제를 먹은 건강한 사람들은 비타민을 먹지 않은 사람들보다 연구 기간 사망할 확률이 되려 4% 더 높았습니다.

이번 연구 결과는 미국 의학협회 저널 JAMA 네트워크 오픈(JAMA Network Open)에 현지시간 26일 게재됐습니다.

이번 연구 결과는 비타민 관련 시장에 큰 충격을 줄 수도 있습니다.미국에서는 성인의 3분의 1이 종합비타민제를 먹는 것으로 알려졌으며 영국은 성인 인구의 거의 절반이 섭취해 시장 규모가 연간 5억 파운드(약 8777억 원)에 이르는 것으로 알려졌습니다.
