중국이 침체한 홍콩 관광업계를 살리기 위해 자국 여행객이 홍콩·마카오에서 쇼핑할 때 적용하던 면세 한도를 최대 3배로 올렸습니다.

오늘(28일) 홍콩 공영방송 RTHK 등에 따르면 이날 중국 당국은 홍콩과 마카오를 방문했다가 돌아오는 18세 이상 본토 여행객에 대한 면세 한도를 1회 여행당 기존 5천위안(약 95만원)에서 1만2천위안(약 227만원)으로 상향한다고 발표했습니다.

아우러 본토 여행객이 접경 지역 면세점에서 쇼핑할 경우는 면세 한도가 1만5천위안(약 283만원)까지 늘어난다고 덧붙였습니다.

면세 한도 상향은 다음 달 1일부터 시행됩니다.

현재는 중국 여행객이 홍콩·마카오에서 쇼핑하고 돌아갈 때 면세 한도인 5천위안을 초과하는 액수에 대해 13∼50%의 세금이 부과됩니다.이 같은 기준은 1996년 도입됐습니다.

홍콩 정부는 면세 한도 상향에 따라 중국 관광객의 홍콩 내 지출이 연간 최소 88억홍콩달러(약 1조5천500억원),프리미어리그 일정 확정최대 176억홍콩달러(약 3조1천억원) 늘어날 것으로 기대했습니다.

중국 정부의 이같은 조치는 코로나19 팬데믹 이후에도 홍콩 경제가 살아나지 않고 중국 관광객들이 더 이상 홍콩에서 지갑을 열지 않는 가운데 나왔습니다.

중국 경제 둔화와 홍콩의 고물가,프리미어리그 일정 확정위안화 약세 등으로 과거 홍콩 관광업계의 '큰손'이었던 중국 여행객들은 이제 홍콩에서 가성비 좋은 당일치기 여행을 주로 한다고 홍콩 언론들은 전했습니다.

또한 중국이 하이난섬을 통째로 '면세 천국'으로 적극 육성하면서 중국인들이 럭셔리 쇼핑을 위해 홍콩을 찾을 이유가 사라졌다는 분석이 나옵니다.
