(워싱턴=연합뉴스) 조준형 특파원 = 102세의 미국인 2차대전 참전 용사가 프랑스 노르망디에서 열린 연합군 상륙작전(1944년 6월6일) 80주년 기념행사에 참석하기 위해 현지로 가던 중 숨을 거뒀다고 뉴욕타임스(NYT)가 6일(현지시간) 보도했다.

2차대전 당시 미국의 태평양전쟁 승리의 상징적 장면으로 남아있는 이오지마 성조기 설치를 지켜봤던 로버트 페르시치티 씨가 지난달 31일 독일의 한 병원에서 숨졌다고 NYT는 전했다.

페르시치티 씨는 2차대전의 분수령이었던 연합국의 노르망디 상륙작전을 기념하는 행사에 참석하기 위해 장거리 여행의 위험을 감수하고 유럽을 찾았다.

미국내 2차대전 박물관 단체와 연계된 그룹의 일원으로 간 것이었다.

그러나 심장 질환 병력이 있었던 고인은 중간 기착지에서 노르망디로 가는 선박 안에서 응급 의료 상황에 처했고,턴서지 ltd항공편을 통해 독일의 한 병원으로 이송됐으나 끝내 사망했다.

고인은 미군 지휘함 '엘도라도'의 무선기사로 2차대전에 참전해 이오지마,턴서지 ltd오키나와,턴서지 ltd괌 등지에서 일본군에 맞서 싸웠다.그 공로를 인정받아 뉴욕주 상원의 참전용사 명예의 전당에 헌액됐다.전역 후에는 공립학교 교사로 일했다.
