넷플릭스 시리즈 '슈퍼리치 이방인'에서 '김치'를 중국식 매운 채소 절임을 뜻하는 '라바이차이'(辣白菜)로 표기해 또 다시 논란이 되고 있다.

서경덕 성신여대 창의융합부 교수는 "많은 누리꾼들이 제보를 해 사실을 알게됐다"면서 "넷플릭스에서 이런 실수를 한 건 이번이 ㅊ음이 아니다"라고 꼬집었다.

서 교수는 "세계적인 영향력을 가진 플랫폼이라 넷플릭스측에 즉각 항의 메일을 보냈다"고 밝혔다.그러면서 "중국의 '김치공정'이 이어지고 있는 만큼 이런 상황은 중국에 빌미를 제공할 수 있다"면서 "최대한 빨리 시정을 해야 한다"고 강조했다.

문화체육관광부는 지난 2021년 '공공 용어의 외국어 번역 및 표기 지침'을 일부 개정했고 김치의 올바른 중국어 표기를 '신치'(辛奇)로 명시했다.

서 교수는 "지난해 넷플릭스는 다수의 중국어 자막 서비스에 '김치'를 '파오차이'(泡菜)로 표기해 많은 논란을 일으켰다"고 지적했다.

그는 또한 "진정한 글로벌 기업이라면 한 나라의 민감한 사안에 대해서는 더욱 주의를 기울여야한다"고 덧붙였다.

한편 넷플릭스는 최근 '더 에이트 쇼'에서 '스페인어'(라틴아메리카 지역 포함) 자막에 '동해'를 '일본해'로 표기해 논란이 됐었다.
