조지 클루니 [AP=연합뉴스] 영화배우 조지 클루니가 10일(현지시간) 조 바이든 대통령의 대선 후보 사퇴를 촉구했다.

할리우드의 대표적인 진보성향의 클루니는 이날 뉴욕타임스(NYT) 기고에서 "조 바이든 대통령을 사랑하지만 우리는 새로운 후보가 필요하다.바이든은 시간과의 싸움에서 이길 수 없다"며 대선 후보 용퇴를 요구했다.

민주당원이기도 한 클루니는 또 "우리는 이 대통령으로 11월(대선)에 이기지 못할 것"이라며 "거기에다 우리는 하원도 이기지 못하고,프로야구 섬머리그상원도 뺏길 것"이라고 주장했다.그러면서 그는 민주당 지도부와 의원들이 바이든 대통령에게 후보직 사퇴를 요구해야 한다고 주문했다.

클루니는 2020년 대선 때 바이든 대통령에게 50만달러 이상을 기부하고 가상 모금행사를 주최하는 등 오랜 기간 민주당을 후원해왔다.

지난달엔 로스앤젤레스에서 열린 바이든 대통령 모금 행사를 공동 주최해 민주당 역대 대선 캠페인 중 최대 규모인 2800만달러(약 388억원)를 모금하는 것을 도왔다.
