정부가 2026년부터 지하 500ｍ 깊이에 방사성폐기물 처분 시스템의 성능을 실험·연구하는 시설을 짓는다.

산업통상자원부는 한국원자력환경공단과 함께 고준위 방사성폐기물 연구용 지하 연구시설을 확보하기 위한 부지 공모를 시작한다고 18일 밝혔다.

연구용 지하 연구시설은 고준위 방사성폐기물 처분시설과 유사한 심도인 지하 약 500ｍ에서 한국 고유의 암반 특성과 한국형 고준위 방사성폐기물 처분 시스템의 성능 등을 실험·연구한다.

고준위 방폐장과는 별개의 부지에 건설하는 '순수 연구시설'로,룰렛 체험운영 과정에서 사용하는 사용후핵연료와 방사성폐기물은 연구시설 내에 전혀 반입되지 않는다.
