(제네바=연합뉴스) 안희 특파원 = 최근 아프리카를 중심으로 확산하고 있는 엠폭스(MPOX·옛 명칭 원숭이두창)에 대해 최고 수준의 보건 경계태세를 선언해야 할지를 놓고 세계보건기구(WHO)가 14일(현지시간) 회의를 연다.

WHO는 오는 14일 국제 보건규약 긴급위원회를 소집한다고 12일 밝혔다.

국제 보건규약 긴급위원회는 특정 질병에 대해 국제적 공중보건 비상사태(PHEIC) 선언을 해야 하는지를 판단하고 사무총장에게 의견을 제시하는 전문가 그룹이다.

PHEIC는 WHO가 내릴 수 있는 최고 수준의 공중 보건 경계 선언이다.PHEIC가 선언되면 WHO가 질병 억제를 위한 연구와 자금 지원,농구 올림픽 예선국제적 보건 조치 등을 강력하게 추진할 수 있다.

중서부 아프리카의 풍토병이었던 엠폭스는 2022년 5월부터 세계 각국으로 확산했다.이 병에 걸리면 수포성 발진 증상을 보이는 경우가 많고 급성 발열이나 두통,농구 올림픽 예선근육통 등을 동반하기도 한다.

유럽과 미주 등지로 번졌던 엠폭스는 2022년 하반기부터 확산이 둔화했다.이에 따라 WHO는 PHEIC 선언 10개월 만인 작년 5월 해제를 발표했다.

그러나 또 다른 하위 계통의 엠폭스가 아프리카에서 작년 9월부터 확산 조짐을 보였다.가장 확산이 빠른 곳은 콩고민주공화국으로,농구 올림픽 예선올해에만 확진 사례 1만4천479건,농구 올림픽 예선사망 455명 등이 나왔다.

아프리카 질병통제예방센터(CDC)에 따르면 아프리카 대륙 55개국 가운데 최소 16개국에서 엠폭스가 발병했다.

WHO가 소집한 국제 보건규약 긴급위원회는 엠폭스 확산 규모와 속도,농구 올림픽 예선주요 발병지의 의료 대응 역량 및 질병 통제 수준 등을 두루 고려해 PHEIC 선언이 필요한지를 판단할 것으로 보인다.

테워드로스 아드하놈 거브러여수스 WHO 사무총장은 특별한 고려 사항이 없는 경우 위원회의 의견을 존중해 PHEIC 선언 여부를 발표한다.
