엔/달러 환율이 11일(현지시간) 뉴욕 외환시장에서 한때 4엔 이상 급락하자 일본 당국이 또다시 시장 개입을 단행했다는 관측이 제기됐다.

교도통신과 니혼게이자이신문(닛케이)에 따르면 엔/달러 환율은 미국 소비자물가지수(CPI) 상승률이 전년 동월 대비 3.0%로 전문가 예상을 밑돌며 둔화세를 보인 것으로 나타난 직후 큰 폭으로 변동했다.

엔/달러 환율은 미국 CPI 발표 이후 161.6엔대에서 160.7엔대로 떨어진 뒤 잠시 후 157.4엔 전후까지 하락했다.일본 시간으로 12일 오전 5시 30분 기준 환율은 158.8엔대다.

교도통신은 "엔화 가치가 6월 중순 이후 약 3주 만에 가장 높은 수준"이라며 "시장 일부에서는 일본 정부와 일본은행이 엔화를 매입하고 달러를 파는 개입을 실시한 것으로 보고 있다"고 전했다.

이에 대해 일본 환율 정책을 지휘하는 간다 마사토 재무성 재무관은 11일 취재진에 "개입 여부에 대해서는 언급할 입장이 아니다"라고 말했다.

그는 최근 엔화 약세가 지속된 데 대해 "상당히 큰 변동으로 국민 생활에 영향이 있지 않은가"라며 "식품·에너지를 외국에 의존할 수밖에 없는 가계,뉴캐슬 이적재료를 외국에 의존하는 기업으로서는 이렇게 큰 변동은 힘들다"고 강조했다.

앞서 일본 당국은 4월 26일부터 5월 29일까지 약 한 달간 9조7천885억엔(약 84조7천억원) 규모의 시장 개입을 했다고 발표한 바 있다.
