태백현대위는 장성광업소 폐광 이후 다양한 활용 가능성을 가진 갱도의 활용방안을 찾을때까지 폐갱도 수몰을 반대하며 올 5월7일부터 황지연못과 각 행정동주민센터 등에서 갱도 수몰 반대 시민 서명운동을 펼쳐왔다.

이번 서명운동은 지난해 11월 공개된 '대한석탄공사 광해 개황 조사 및 종합복구대책 수립 용역' 보고서에 장성광업소 폐광 이후 갱도에 지하수를 채워 넣는 식으로 광해 복구가 진행될 것이라는 내용에 반대하기 위한 조치다.현대위는 1일 대통령실에도 건의문을 보낼 방침이다.

지역구 의원인 이철규 국회의원은 "태백시민들의 마음을 잘 알기에 현재 추진하는 사업 외 갱도를 이용한 사업에 다각적으로 사용할 수 있도록 적극 추진하겠다"고 밝혔다.
