외교부는 이날 대변인 논평을 통해 "정부는 일본의 과거 침략전쟁을 미화하고 전쟁범죄자를 합사한 야스쿠니 신사에 일본의 책임 있는 지도급 인사들이 또다시 공물료를 봉납하거나 참배를 되풀이한 데 대해 깊은 실망과 유감을 표한다"고 밝혔다.

이어 "우리 정부는 일본의 책임 있는 지도자들이 역사를 직시하고 과거사에 대한 겸허한 성찰과 진정한 반성을 행동으로 보여줄 것을 촉구한다"라며 "이는 미래지향적 한일관계 발전의 중요한 토대임을 다시 한번 강조한다"고 덧붙였다.

NHK방송 등 일본 언론에 따르면 기시다 총리는 오전 도쿄 지요다구의 야스쿠니 신사에 다마구시(玉串·물푸레나무 가지에 흰 종이를 단 것) 대금을 봉납했다.
